Professor Neil Mercer Launches The Gateway
Last Friday, parents, carers and specially invited guests gathered at our new Year 8 College, The Gateway, for its official launch. The Gateway is a very special college, based in its own refurbished building with its own dedicated pastoral team. By the time our year 8 students have passed through The Gateway, they have mastered the tools and techniques essential for GCSE study. In addition to lessons in traditional subjects, Gateway students pursue an innovative curriculum which boosts students’ communication skills including speaking, listening and oral articulation. The curriculum incorporates many concepts developed by Professor Neil Mercer, a renowned educational specialist based at The University of Cambridge.
Professor Mercer was our guest of honour last Friday and officially opened The Gateway. Mr Thomas and Mrs Bircher, The Gateway’s Director, addressed students and guests followed by Dea Passi who gave a moving account of her first weeks at the college.
Guests were treated to sumptuous light refreshments prepared by the school’s hospitality team and then visited two of The Gateway’s classrooms where they saw the new curriculum being taught to students by Miss Kirby, College Curriculum Co-ordinator and College Leader, Mrs Wilkinson.
Professor Mercer commented “It is wonderful to see how The Gateway’s students are responding so well to these stretching techniques and developing skills that are so essential for their success at school and later in life.”
