On Wednesday, the magnificent Cathy MacPhail, author of “Granny Nothing” travelled all the way from Scotland to The Bridge.

Year 7 and 8 students together with Year 6 students from Whitmore Park Primary School were treated to a master class in story writing. She explored devising ideas for stories, eye catching opening lines, and building and element of surprise into writing. She described how she collects names for characters from the children she works with in schools she visits. (Maybe we will see some familiar names in her future books!)

Her latest book, “Out of the Depths”, was inspired by a starter line about a dead teacher (watch out Mr Townsend). The second book in the series, “Out of the Shadows” is out next March. The Third book is finished, but Cathy is looking for a title for it – she wondered whether our students could help her find a good title?

During the introductions, Cathy’s agent remarked “What a fantastic environment President Kennedy School has for its Year 7s.” Who knows, maybe The Bridge will be an appropriate setting for someone’s amazing story?
