Year 9 Engineering Day With The Smallpiece Trust
Year 9 students have been taking part in a STEM (Science, Technology, English and Maths) day specifically to encourage our students to explore and consider engineering as a possible career choice. The day was run by our Technology staff in partnership with the Smallpiece Trust, an independent educational charity, that run high quality, hands-on STEM activities and exciting engineering courses for pupils in Years 6-12.
Students were required to produce from scratch a small model motor driven car utilising a capacitor which holds energy and is therefore environmentally friendly. Students competed against each other in teams, designing, producing and then presenting their cars to the whole cohort. The winning team gave the best presentation, worked hard on the day and asked relevant and challenging questions. The winners were who were awarded a place on an engineering residential course which lasts 3 days and 2 nights at Coventry University in July 2014.The residential is a fantastic opportunity for students and we are sure they will gain a great deal from it.
