Post 16 Attend an Inspiring Day at the Debrett’s Foundation, London

Six year 12 students were invited to the Debrett’s Foundation, which is an exclusive network of leading and most influential people in today’s Britain. The organisation focuses on inspiring and empowering the people of tomorrow through training.

Our journey to London was like no other as some of us had just learnt to travel by train and underground. It was exhilarating to walk down the streets of London and some of us felt very out of place among the glamorous hotels and cars. When we arrived at the imposing Debrett’s building, we were greeted and sat in a rather well decorated waiting area.

After an initial introduction from the organisers, we were given a brief overview about the proceedings of the day.

Initially we were taken through etiquettes, greeting exercises and various forms of body language. It was great to learn about how to make a smashing first impression and to deliver a proper handshake. I was surprised to know that a lasting impression can be left in mere 7 seconds of meeting someone. We were then asked to prepare an elevator pitch about our achievements and to present in a group. Finally, we got some interview practice questions and we ran through of our long-term personal development plans and how to work towards them.

We had an opportunity to meet a great personality called Ramona da Gama. She built her own business and her brand from a young age. She talked about the importance of being unique and memorable. We found her life story extremely inspiring and motivating.

On the return journey we were exhausted but had a real sense of accomplishment.
